WEBSITE DECISIONS / MAINTAIN OR REBUILD
Maintenance keeps a good system healthy. A redesign changes the system. The right choice depends on whether your website’s problems are isolated or structural.
Quick answer
Choose maintenance when the website already has a solid structure and mainly needs updates, security work, content improvements, speed fixes, or small design changes. Choose a redesign when the site’s structure, messaging, mobile experience, branding, or technology no longer supports the business.
What counts as website maintenance?
- WordPress, theme, and plugin updates.
- Backups and security checks.
- Broken-link and form testing.
- Updating services, staff, hours, policies, prices, and photos.
- Improving an existing page based on Search Console or customer behavior.
- Performance optimization and technical cleanup.
- Adding a new case study, resource article, or landing page that fits the existing structure.
What makes a redesign different?
A redesign changes the information architecture, visual system, templates, conversion paths, and often the content model. It may also involve a CMS rebuild, URL changes, new structured data, new navigation, and major search migration work.
Five questions that make the decision easier
- Can customers quickly tell what you do and who you serve?
- Does the site work well on a phone?
- Can your team update normal business information without fighting the website?
- Do the existing pages map cleanly to the services and locations you want to be found for?
- Would fixing the site require changing the same design or content problem on most pages?
If the first four answers are mostly yes and the fifth is no, maintain and improve. If the first four are mostly no and the fifth is yes, a redesign is likely more efficient.
Do not throw away search equity casually
Before a redesign, inventory pages that already earn impressions, clicks, backlinks, leads, or local visibility. Preserve good URLs where possible, plan redirects when URLs must change, and keep useful content that still serves customers. A redesign should improve the system without erasing evidence that already works.
